DANISH SOCIETY FOR IMMIGRATION HISTORY

WHAT IS THE DANISH SOCIETY FOR IMMIGRATION HISTORY?

The purpose of the Danish Society for Immigration History is to share and broaden knowledge of the history of immigration to Denmark and to raise awareness of The Migration Museum of Denmark. The museum plays an important role as the only museum in Denmark dedicated exclusively to 500 years of migration history and its significance for Denmark.

We support this work by publishing documentation and stories and by organising lectures, talks and other educational events – all in close cooperation with the museum’s staff.

The initiative to establish the Society was taken by journalist Ole Hammer, who has many years of experience working with immigration and integration. The Society also consists of:

  • Kjeld Rothenberg, lawyer and former deputy head of office in Copenhagen’s Social Services Administration (vulnerable children and young people).
  • Jakob Erle, former folk high school principal and director of the Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute in Cairo. Founder of the International Academy for Education and Democracy.
  • Fakhra Mohammed, youth counsellor in Copenhagen and former member of the Board for Ethnic Equality.
  • Morten Kjærum, director of the Wallenberg Institute in Lund and former director of the Danish Centre for Human Rights.
  • Leif Lønsmann, journalist and former Director of Radio and Head of the Concert Hall at DR.

On 15 June 2019, the Society was presented at an event attended by 200 guests at The Migration Museum of Denmark in Farum. The event also included a presentation of Ole Hammer’s book “Bidrag til Danmarks indvandringshistorie” (“Contributions to the History of Immigration to Denmark”). Former Minister of the Interior Birte Weiss was the keynote speaker. You can read her speech below. Music was provided by Trio Valakia.
